Scientific activity
The area of scientific interests of V. G. Shevchuk is the physics of combustion and explosion. Vladimir Gavrilovich - Head of the Scientific School of Combustion Physics of Dispersed Systems at ONU named after I.I. Mechnikov . Together with colleagues and students, he conducted extensive experimental and theoretical studies of the processes of flare, combustion, and gas dynamics of dispersed systems — rare particles, conglomerates, and gas suspensions. The main attention is paid to the development of the physical foundations of fire and explosion safety.
The physical aspects of flame propagation in dispersed fuels of various types (metals, solid and liquid organic compounds) formed the basis of VG Shevchuk's doctoral dissertation (1988). This line of research aimed to clarify: the mechanisms of heat transfer from the front of burning particles (droplets) to a cold gas suspension; the role of gas-dynamic factors in the development of the flame propagation process; ways to influence the process macroparameters. The author, his colleagues and students (S. V. Goroshin, L. V. Boychuk, E. M. Kondratyev, A. K. Bezrodnykh, Yu. M. Kostyshin) were able to directly determine the contribution of conductive heat transfer to the process of heat transfer from the zone burning suspensions into a cold mixture under various experimental conditions. This made it possible to elucidate the physical nature of the concentration limits of flame propagation in disperse systems, to prove the possibility of applying the concept of “fundamental flame velocity” for discrete (disperse) systems, adopted for gases, and to determine the suspension parameter range, where this is valid.
VG Shevchuk’s ideas on the relationship between the parameters of a disperse system of gas-dynamic flame propagation regimes (laminar, vibrational, turbulent) turned out to be interesting and productive. Successful experimental and theoretical development of all these problems made it possible to solve a number of applied problems of meteorology (active impact on clouds and fogs - together with the Institute of Experimental Meteorology), fire and explosion safety - together with the All-Russian Research Institute of Fire Defense ( Moscow ) and the All-Russian Research Institute of Chemical Engineering ( Severodonetsk ), ecology, energy burning.
V. G. Shevchuk is the author of more than 90 scientific publications.
