Morphology

The Big Snow Cave has 5 famous entrances, which were initially considered separate caves [2] [3] :

  • Snow Cave ( Polish: Jaskinia Śnieżna ) - 1701 m above sea level, discovered in 1959. The entrance to it is located in the part of Vyžnya Whistle of the valley of Malei Luka at the foot of the wall of the terrace of Kotlin . The cave is the main part of the Big Snow system. Its length is about 14 954 meters, and the height of the fall is 622 meters [4] ;
  • Cave above Kotlini ( Polish: Jaskinia nad Kotlinami ) - 1875 m above sea level, opened in 1966, combined with Snezhnaya in 1968. Its entrance is located in the Vyžna part of the Whistle of the valley of Malei Luka on the edge of Kotlin . The length of the cave is about 1465 meters, the height of the fall is 433.5 meters. Nearby is the entrance to the caves of Malolukey ;
  • Jasny Aven ( Polish: Jasny Awen ) - 1852 m above sea level, first investigated in 1959, combined with Bolshaya Snezhnaya in 1978. Its entrance is located in the part of Vyzhnya Whistle of the valley of Malei Luka , 40 meters from the entrance to the cave above Kotlini. The length of the cave is about 115 meters, the height of the fall is 61 meters;
  • Wielka Litvorova Cave ( Polish: Jaskinia Wielka Litworowa ) - 1906 m above sea level, combined with the Big Snow in 1995. The second longest cave in the Big Snowy system. Its entrance is located in the Litvorova Valley on the slope of the Malolonnyak mountain. Its length is 7185 meters, and the height of the fall is 370 meters;
  • Wolf Cave ( Polish: Jaskinia Wilcza ) - 1672 m above sea level, opened in 1996, combined with the Big Snow 1999. This is the smallest cave in the Big Snowy system. Its entrance is located in the Maleya Luka Valley within the walls descending from Kotlin to the Nizhnaya Svistuvka punishment . Its length is about 54.7 meters, the height of the fall is 16 meters.

The entrances are connected by a complex system of pitches and corridors. Some of them contain underground streams, waterfalls, pools or siphons. Water from the cave flows through a karst spring known as the “Ice Spring” ( Polish: Lodowe Źródło ).

Research

Snezhnaya Cave was discovered in 1959 by cavers from Zakopane . In 1960, its explored fall height reached 545 meters, which made it at that time the fourth in the world in depth. In subsequent years, the cave was intensively explored and connected to other caves. Research continues to this day, including attempts to combine Bolshaya Snezhnaya with Poland’s second largest cave , Snezna Studna ( Polish Śnieżna Studnia ).
