Biography
Born into a family of an immigrant from Northern Ireland , founder and president of the South Carolina Canal and Railroad Company .
In 1825 he graduated from South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina ) in Columbia .
Successful businessman . Planter He was engaged in agriculture. He lived in Charleston .
Since 1837 he became an active politician. He was elected a member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina in 1838-1842 and the Senate (1842-1844).
From December 7, 1844 to December 8, 1846 - Governor of South Carolina .
After leaving the post of governor, Aiken served in the US House of Representatives (March 4, 1851 - March 3, 1857). In December 1855, Aiken was one of the leading candidates for the post of speaker of the US House of Representatives .
In 1861, he was arrested by federal authorities for refusing to attend the U.S. flag hoist in Fort Sumter after it was captured by northerners. After the end of the American Civil War (1865) he was elected to the US House of Representatives, but was deprived of his seat.
