Biography
General information
Born February 19, 1915 in Zurich, the son of a professor of chemistry. He studied at the universities of Zurich, Uppsala and Stockholm, studied English, Romansh and Icelandic philology. He worked as a journalist, from 1967 to 1980 he was the chief editor of the daily newspaper Der Landbote ( Winterthur ). In 1943 he married Heidi Baur-Sallenbach, two children were born in marriage. He was one of Switzerland's leading experts in Esperanto, Swiss and Allemanic dialects of the German language and Romansh.
Scientific work
- In 1939, he and his wife Heidi Sallenbach, a textbook of the Swiss German “Praktische Sprachlehre des Schweizerdeutschen” (with it. - “Practical Course of Swiss German”), which by 13 editions passed in 2008. In his work “What exactly is Swiss German?” ( German: Was ist eigentlich Schweizerdeutsch? ) From 1983, Baur put forward the theory that Swiss German is not a dialect, but an independent dialect.
- Baur was one of the few linguists whose scientific work was devoted to the Romansh language. In 1984, he translated his scientific work, “Retoromanian” ( German: Das Rätoromanische ), into Esperanto. In 1996, he published in German the work “ Allegra “Not enough” ( German: Allegra genügt nicht ), in 1997 - “Glory to Griske: Index of the Romance language” ( German: Viva la Grischa: Ein Wegweiser für das Bündnerromanische ).
- In 1930, Baur began studying Esperanto at the gymnasium. He was a member of the Esperanto Society of Zurich, the Swiss Society of Esperantists and the World Esperanto Association . From 1980 to 1986, he was editor of Svisa Esperanto Revuo. He participated in the 31st and 32nd World Esperanto Congresses, which took place in Bern, in charge of information coverage and printing, and was also a member of the local organizing committee of the 64th World Esperanto Congress in Lucerne . He has published many Esperanto books, including La Fenomeno Svislando. From 1946, he worked at Schweizer Radio International , broadcast weekly programs in Esperanto until 1947, then until 1991 worked on a separate broadcast program for the radio station in Esperanto.
