Luts, Theodore

Theodore Luts ( est. Theodor Luts ; 2 (14) August 1896 Palamuse - September 24, 1980 , São Paulo ) - Estonian film director and cameraman . One of the pioneers of Estonian cinematography [1] . His film is a patriotic film Noored kotkad ( Young Eagles , 1927) is considered one of the cornerstones of Estonian cinema [2] , and the film Päikese lapsed ( Children of the Sun , 1932), directed by Lutsem, is the first Estonian full-length sound film [3] .

Biography

He studied at the Faculty of Economics of Tallinn University . Took part in the Estonian war of liberation . After graduating from military school, he became an artillery officer, served in the army. Then he was a teacher of modern dance. In 1926–1927 he studied cinematography in Paris [4] .

From 1927 to 1932 he made 3 feature films and about 10 documentaries in Estonia. His first work was a film about the war of liberation Noored kotkad ( Young Eagles , 1927) [4] .

He worked at the state-subsidized film studio Eesti Kultuurfilm . In 1932 he went to Finland , where he made a successful career. Until 1939, he made 20 feature films there as an operator. In 1942, together with his Finnish colleagues, he founded the Fenno-Filmi film community. There, from 1943 to 1944, he directed 6 feature films as a director and producer. Among them are Salainen ase (1943) and Varjoja Kannaksella (1943). Then he moved to Sweden, where in 1945-1946 he worked as an operator [4] . In 1947 he emigrated to Brazil. There he made the film Caraça, Porta do Céu in 1950 [5] .

Films of Theodore Luts shot in Estonia are stored in the Estonian Film Archive [6] .

Family

Theodore Luts was married to Accelle Luts (1905–2005), who played Noored kotkad in his film and co-authored several scenarios.

His older brother is a classic of Estonian literature Oscar Luts (1887-1953).
