The lagoon of Karavasta ( alb. Laguna e Karavastasë ) is the largest lagoon in Albania and one of the largest in the Adriatic Sea . It is separated from the Adriatic Sea by a large strip of sand. The lagoon is part of the national park Divyaka-Karavasta. It was recognized as a territory of international importance protected by the Ramsar Convention since November 29, 1995.

Geography
The lagoon is located in the western part of Albania, about 20 kilometers west of the city of Lushnya between the mouths of the Shkumbini and Semani rivers . The lagoon covers an area of about 45 m². The maximum depth is 1.3 m, the average depth is 0.7 m. The lagoon is cut off from the Adriatic Sea, with a long sand spit [1] . The coast is marshy. There are several sandy islands. The lagoon is surrounded by pine forests .
The lagoon is famous for being the nesting site of a rare, curly pelican . About 5% of its global population lives in this lagoon. They build nests only on Pelican Island in this lagoon. The lagoon is also a nesting site for more than 1,300 bird species, including the Little Tern , the Great Cormorant , the Little Cormorant and the Meadowjack [2] .
Since November 29 Karavast lagoon is on the list of wetlands of international importance (number 781) [3] . Since 1994, it has been part of the Divyaka-Karavasta National Park with an area of 222,302 km² [4] . Within the park there are several restaurants. Located on a sandy spit, the beach is popular with tourists.
Since disinfection campaigns have been suspended for a long time, mosquitoes are very active in the area. In 2014, disinfection campaigns were resumed, and a national rehabilitation project was initiated. It includes a moratorium on hunting and the resumption of bird watching.
