History

Algeria never recognized Israel, and in 1967 during the Six Day War, sent a symbolic battalion to fight on the side of the Arab countries that attacked Israel.

In July 1968, terrorists seized the plane of the Israeli airline El Al, which flew out of Rome, and sent it to Algeria. For several weeks, Israel negotiated with Algeria to release the hostages. After 40 days, under heavy pressure from the world community, the passengers were released to Israel.

In 1973, during the Doomsday War, Algeria sent a large expeditionary force to Egypt’s help, consisting of three interceptor squadrons and attackers, artillery and ground forces. He also helped Egypt, translating foreign currency, to wage war against Israel and procure new weapons.

In the mid-1990s, when Israel and the states of northern Africa gradually began to establish diplomatic relations after the signing of agreements in Oslo, Algeria remained one of the last countries to consider such a move and rejected all attempts to establish contacts with Israel. Only when Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak met with Algerian President Abdul Aziz Bouteflika at the funeral of the King of Morocco, Hassan II, on July 25, 1999, were there reports that states could get close. However, contacts ceased on the initiative of Algeria with the start of the second intifada.

There are reports that in the 2000s there were contacts between the two states in the military and economic spheres. An investigation into the terrorist networks led to the fact that the intelligence services of the two countries worked together. Presidential envoys Bouteflika held a secret meeting in Italy with Dani Yatom, the former head of the Mossad. In addition, Israeli companies have been supplying medicine and equipment to Algerian hospitals for several years. [one]

In 2006, representatives of Israel and Algeria together participated in a joint conference of NATO and the countries of the southern and eastern Mediterranean. The conference was also attended by representatives of Tunisia, Morocco, Mauritania, Egypt and Jordan. [2]

In the summer of 2016, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyagu, who also occupies the post of foreign minister, presented a map of the world, on which countries are marked with different colors depending on their hostility to Israel. Algeria is represented on this map in green, which means that Israel does not view this country as threatening the existence of the Jewish state. [3]

In late August 2017, it became known that the “Algerian Committee Against Zionism” was trying to thwart the Africa-Israel summit, scheduled for the end of October of the same year. The head of this movement, Khalid bin Ismail, called on African countries to oppose the normalization of relations with the Jewish state. [4] [5] [6]
