According to the Songfacts website, the song was atypical in sound for the Rolling Stones, since at that time all their compositions were tough and aggressive ( English hard and agressive ) [2] . Moreover, this is one of the few acoustic songs in the entire career of the group [2] .
This was one of the first songs that the group recorded for the album Goats Head Soup (1973). Keith Richards wrote it while in Switzerland between the time the previous Rolling Stones Exile on Main St (1972) was approved by the record company and the way it was released [2] .
"Angie" is still the only ballad of the Rolling Stones to reach number one in the United States. In the UK, the single with her reached 5th place [2] .
