Biography
Duke Christoph - son of Duke Albrecht VII of Mecklenburg-Gustrowski and his wife Anna Brandenburg . At the insistence of the older brother of Johann Albrecht I, the 17-year-old Duke Christoph was appointed in 1554 as the successor to Bishop Christoph von der Schulenburg and thus the first Lutheran administrator of the Ratzeburg Monastery .
In 1555, Duke Christoph also took the post of co-adjudicator of the Archbishop of Riga, Wilhelm of Brandenburg, with the right to inherit his post. This choice was controversial and led to armed clashes, during which July 1, 1556, both were arrested in Koknese . In 1557, they were released as a result of negotiations and recognized as co-adjudicators, but even after the death of Wilhelm of Brandenburg in 1563, Christophe was unable to realize his claims to inherit the archbishopric and was again arrested in the ensuing conflict with the Poles. In 1569, he was released, abandoning all his claims to Riga, and returned to Mecklenburg.
Family
The Duke Christoph married on October 27, 1573, Dorothea of Denmark (1528-1575), daughter of the King of Denmark, Frederick I. Dorothea died two years later at the residence of the Ratzburg bishop in Schoenberg . The second wife of Duke Christophe of Mecklenburg on May 7, 1581 was Elizabeth of Sweden , daughter of the King of Sweden, Gustav Vasa . In this marriage, a daughter Margaret Elizabeth (1584-1616) was born, who in 1608 married the Duke of Johann Albrecht II of Mecklenburg . After the death of Christophe Elizabeth returned to her homeland in Sweden and was buried in Uppsala Cathedral . Christoph was buried in the Schwerin Cathedral .
