Tarawa ( eng. Tarawa ) - an atoll in the Gilbert archipelago , on which the capital of the Republic of Kiribati is located, the South Tarawa agglomeration . The most important state bodies are located in Bairiki , part of the ministries - in Betio and Bikenibeu.

Content
Geography
The atoll consists of approximately 24 small islets, 8 of which are inhabited. The largest island of Bairiki extends from the settlement Bonriki (southeastern part of the atoll) to Bairiki . The largest city, Betio , and the only airport of Tarawa, Bonriki International Airport , is also located in South Tarawa.

History
During World War II, the atoll was occupied by Japanese troops. On November 20-23 , 1943, one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific theater of military operations took place on Tarawa, in which American troops defeated Japanese forces.
Administrative division
The atoll is divided into three constituencies:
- South Tarawa or Teinainano Urban Council (from Bairiki to Bonriki);
- Betio or Betio Town Council ;
- North Tarawa or Tarawa Ieta .

Economy
Copra and pearl fishing are the main occupations of the locals.
