He graduated from the Penza gymnasium in 1878 and entered the St. Petersburg Medical and Surgical Academy . After graduating with honors in 1883, he was left in it to prepare for the profession. He worked in the therapeutic clinic of Professor D. I. Koshlakov and in the pathological and anatomical room with N. P. Ivanovsky . His first work, written in 1885, was devoted to the microorganisms of koumiss and their fermentation properties. In 1886, he defended his doctoral dissertation "Materials for the doctrine of tuberculosis ."
Since 1887, he worked in Warsaw, in the Uyazdovo Military Hospital, first as a resident , and since 1890 as a prosector . At the same time, in 1887-1890, he was in charge of the smallpox calf of the Warsaw Military District. In 1891, his most significant work appeared “On Microorganisms in Dysentery,” which brought him worldwide fame and priority in discovering the causative agent of bacterial dysentery , called the Grigoryev-Shigi sticks (a Japanese scientist discovered and described it in detail in 1897).
In 1892-1894 he trained in forensic medicine with professors Dietrich in Prague and Hoffmann in Vienna; in Paris was with I.I. Mechnikov and E. Ru, in Berlin with M. Rubner, in Würzburg with R. Virchow.
In 1895-1897 he was a privat-docent of pathological anatomy with pathological histology of the Military Medical Academy. Since 1897 - an extraordinary professor at the Department of Forensic Medicine at the University of Warsaw , since 1902 - an ordinary professor at this department. In 1911 he was transferred to Moscow University as an ordinary professor of the medical faculty, but in 1912 he became the head of the Department of Forensic Medicine of the Military Medical Academy and a separate clinic at the clinical hospital until the end of his life.
He also studied the etiology and pathogenesis of other infectious diseases: rabies, cholera, pemphigus; studied the morphology and physiology of microbial cells and methods of staining, described in detail the process of formation of spores in bacilli and their germination in vegetative forms (1885), suggested that Negri bodies are shells (capsules) that form around the causative agent of rabies. He was engaged in forensic research of material evidence (the study of methods for the preparation and use of serum in the Chistovich-Ulengut reaction to establish the species of blood, etc.).
In 1914 he was elected the first chairman of the Society of Forensic Physicians in Petrograd, was an expert on the forensic part of the Medical Council under the Ministry of the Interior. He actively participated in the organization and conduct of the Pirogov congresses , in the work of the Interdepartmental Commission for the revision of the medical legislation of Russia. His explanatory note “On the design of forensic institutes” has been preserved.
Suddenly died in Petrograd on January 6 ( 19 ), 1916 .
