History

The exterior of the courtyard

Kursumli Khan was built in the XVI century, the exact date is unknown. According to some reports, the building was built around 1550 by Muslihudin Abdul Gani, also known as Muezzin Khodzal-Madini [5] . Presumably, it was built on the foundation of an older building. Kursumli Khan served as an inn, there were stables for 100 horses [6] . In 1787, the building was turned into a prison. Many Bulgarian-Macedonian revolutionaries were stationed there. From 1904 to 1914, the building was again used as a hotel [5] . Kursumli Khan was seriously injured during the 1963 earthquake , but was then rebuilt. It is currently part of the museum and is used as a lapidary [5] .

Architecture

The architecture of the Kursumli Khan is similar to other urban Ottoman caravanserais of that period. The walls form a square, and the roof consists of pyramidal domes. “Kursumli” means tin, which indicates that this metal was originally used to cover the roof [2] (according to another version, the roof was covered with lead [3] ). From the central part of Kursumli Khan is a courtyard with a fountain , surrounded by a two-story covered gallery . This gallery opens the door to the rooms, each of which was equipped with a fireplace [2] . The premises on the ground floor of the building were used as a warehouse, the upper floor - for sleeping rooms [3] . The main courtyard was connected through an arch to another courtyard around which stalls were located [2] .
