History

The first bridge designs appeared back in the 1960s. It was originally planned as a suspension bridge on two pylons. Later, the project was changed in order to save. The final project was developed by a team of engineers at the Stolitsa design bureau under the leadership of Vitold Vitkovsky.

The bridge was opened on November 28, 1981. At that time, the Solidarity trade union was active in the country. As a concession from the state , the bridge was named in honor of the General of the Second World War, Stefan Rovecki , known under the pseudonym "Grotto". This fact was unusual for communist times. The assignment of the bridge to the name of Rovetsky was met by mass demonstrations of war veterans and the democratic opposition.

Description

Along with the Sikerski Bridge , the General Stefan Grot- Rowiecki Bridge is one of the largest bridges in Warsaw and one of the busiest. The length of the bridge is 645 meters. It consists of two structurally independent parts, each of which currently has four lanes.

The bridge is poorly adapted for pedestrians and cyclists. It has two pedestrian paths, but they are very narrow and make it difficult to ride bicycles. Sidewalks are separated from the carriageway by road barriers .

Reconstruction for the S8 Motorway

In September 2009, the reconstruction of the Torun Highway began with the bridge, it expanded to ten lanes (five in each direction). After the reconstruction and the construction of a link between Konotop and Povonzkovskaya Street, the entire route will become part of the S8 expressway.

The project was planned for the period from 2008 to 2010, but the city had problems with the construction of a new Maria Sklodowska-Curie bridge , which caused a delay due to the lack of alternative routes during the reconstruction of the bridge.

The reconstruction contract was signed in July 2013. In October 2015, work was completed and the bridge was reopened [1] .
