University history
It was founded on September 19, 1941 , when the Order of the People's Commissar of Defense of the USSR No. 0323 from the 1st Moscow Red Banner Military Aviation Technical School of Communications allocated separate schools for the specialties of the Air Force . [3] One of these schools, located in the city of Tushino, Moscow Region, was ordered by the people's commissar of defense of the USSR on February 5, 1941 No. 049 as the 2nd Moscow Military Aviation School of Air Force Mechanics and served as the beginning of education Institute.
With the beginning of the Great Patriotic War in October 1941, the school was evacuated to the city of Abdulino of the Chkalov region for further training of personnel.
On March 7, 1943, the school of aircraft mechanics returned to Tushino.
In October 1943, the T-bills of the USSR takes the decision to transfer the school from Tushino to the city of Serpukhov, Moscow Region.
On August 18, 1944, the school received the Red Banner and Diploma of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR for eternal storage.
In the period from 1946 to 1948, the transition was made to the training of mechanics for the special equipment of military aircraft of jet aircraft — a step towards the preparation of future rocket specialists.
Directive of the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR dated December 23, 1948 No. ORG / 5/96511 The 2nd Moscow Military Aviation Mechanical School of Air Force Intelligence was reorganized into the Serpukhov Military Aviation Technical School of the USSR Air Forces, which began to train technical officers.
March 15, 1960 Serpukhov School was incorporated into the Strategic Missile Forces of the USSR.
By order of the USSR Minister of Defense dated March 10, 1962 No. 0027 the Serpukhov Military Aviation Technical School of the Special Services of the USSR Air Forces was transformed into the Serpukhov Higher Military Command Engineering School, consisting of two faculties. In 1972, the third faculty was opened, and in 1977, the fourth.
Order of the Minister of Defense of the USSR of June 13, 1983 No. 0143 Serpukhov Higher Military Command and Engineering School was renamed Serpukhov Higher Military Command and Engineering School of Rocket Forces named after the Lenin Komsomol.
In the 1980s, the Pioneer (RSD-10) was the base rocket complex for study, in Topol (RS-12M) at the end of the 1980s, and in the 1990s, Topol-M ( RS-12M2).
Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of August 29, 1998 No. 1009 and in accordance with the Order of the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation of September 16, 1998 No. 417 Serpukhov Higher Military Command and Engineering School of Rocket Forces named after Lenin Komsomol was transformed into Serpukhov Military Institute of Rocket Forces.
The military institute as the leading higher military educational institution of the Strategic Missile Forces made a significant contribution to the development of the military art of the Strategic Missile Forces - tactics of units and subunits armed with PGRK. At the departments of the military institute, together with leading military scientists of the country, the main provisions of the tactics of the maneuvering actions of units and subunits armed with PGRK, methods of their combat use were developed. The scientific and pedagogical school of the military institute has become a leader in the formation and development of tactics of the Missile Forces - an integral part of the tactics of the Armed Forces of Russia, encompassing the theory and practice of preparing and maintaining restraining and combat actions by units and subunits of the Strategic Missile Forces. Scientists of the military institute made a significant contribution to the development of the theory of combat training and operation of rocket weapons.
Since July 15, 2009, the Serpukhov Military Institute has operated as a branch of the Peter the Great Strategic Missile Forces Military Academy [2] . The formation and development of the university is inextricably linked with the history of the country and its Armed Forces. The training system has always been and continues to be in step with the country's military-industrial complex. In the 1980s, the Pioneer was the base missile system for study, the Topol at the end of the 1980s, and the Topol-M since the 1990s. Since 2015, the branch’s faculties have started training specialists for the advanced Yars mobile and stationary missile systems.
Today, 5 departments of higher education and a training battalion of secondary special education, which was formed in 2015, are successfully operating in the branch of the Academy. At the disposal of cadets are equipped with all necessary equipment: laboratories, classrooms, reading rooms, shooting range, autodrome, engineering and chemical campuses, tactical field, training command posts, a stadium with artificial turf, a swimming pool.
During its long history, the university has trained more than 25,000 rocket officers, more than 50 of whom have become generals, more than 30 are doctors of science, and have commanded associations and formations of the Strategic Missile Forces. Among university graduates: 1 twice Hero of the Soviet Union, 3 Heroes of the Soviet Union, 2 Heroes of the Russian Federation.

A distinctive feature of the military institute in the XXI century is the presence in its educational activities of two components: the command and engineering. Their interaction provides departments and faculties with an effective educational process and fruitful research work.

- Established in 1962. Initially, Faculty No. 1 was called “Combat use of missiles and the operation of engines and ground-based mechanical equipment.” In 1965, the first graduation of officers for the Strategic Missile Forces took place.
