Short biography

In 1964 he graduated from the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts in Yogyakarta . In 1961, together with other students ( Amrus Natalsha , Kuslan Budiman , Adrianus Gumelar, Isa Hasanda, and others) created the art workshop “Bumi Tarung” (Land of Struggle) in Yogyakarta [1] . In addition to painting, he was engaged in sculpting, creating bas-reliefs for monuments (for example, the monument Cahaya Bumi Selamat in the city of Martapura ). From 1958 he began to take part in exhibitions at home and abroad. In 1962, with a floating exhibition on board the ship "Tampomas" toured many countries of the Asia-Pacific region.

He actively participated in the activities of the Society of Popular Culture ( Lekra ), which was under the auspices of the Communist Party of Indonesia . After the events of September 30, 1965, it was repressed before 1978. was imprisoned at the Banjarmasin Prison [2] . Many paintings of the early period are not preserved.

After his release, he continued painting. In 2008, he organized the exhibition “Bumi Tarung Workshop”, and in 2011 the exhibition “50 years of the Bumi Tarung workshop”, which was attended by artists who had previously been in this group. [3] . In 2015, he held his personal retrospective exhibition at the National Gallery of Indonesia in Jakarta (65 paintings) [4] . In 2017, he took part in the exhibition “City of a Thousand Rivers” (Banjarmasin).

The artist's paintings are monumental, written mainly in a realistic manner, some, especially of the early period, with a touch of impressionism. Main topics: life of the common people, patriotism, revolution, history, events of September 30, 1965. He wrote and published several books on the art of Indonesia.

Several paintings by Miesbach Tamrina are kept in the collection of the State Museum of the East . In 2018, the Moscow-based publishing house Klyuch-S published an anthology of Malay virtual poetry entitled "Guests of the Evening Dawn", in the cover design of which the artist's picture was used [5] .
