In amateurs, Ratliff won several titles. In 1979, he won the Chicago Heavyweight District Park title.

In 1980, he won the Golden Gloves at the Chicago Heavyweight Championship.

In the same year, representing Chicago, he won the Long-distance Golden Gloves, defeating judges Mitch Green .


Professional career

He made his debut in August 1980 in a fight with Jim Flynn, whom he defeated by knockout in round 1.
