Location
Hochkönig is located west of the city of Bischofshofen in the Austrian state of Salzburg , 42 km south of the city of Salzburg itself . Hochkönig is separated from the rest of the Berchtesgaden Alps: it is separated from the “stone ocean” ( German Steinernes Meer ) by the mountain pass “Torscharte”, passing at an altitude of 2246 m. Alm. This glacier is currently shrinking at a rate of 6.2% per year and is likely to completely disappear in the near future [1] [2] .
Geology
In the highest areas of Hochkönig, the predominant rock is hard Dachstein (roofing, thin-bedded) limestone .
Conquest
Local hunters long ago climbed the peaks of Hochkönig. The first “tourist” ascent to the main summit was made on September 5, 1826, by the professor of theology Peter Karl Tourvizer - according to the usual route today through him. Ochsenkar and him. Arthurhaus . The professors were accompanied by two of his staff: Ernst von Ioanelli and von Sachs - as well as ten porters. Ernst Ioanelli was the first to make the first accurate peak height measurement. The route through Birgkarhaus (großer Parkplatz) is shorter, but at the same time more dangerous and demanding on the physical training of the climber . In winter, the route through Kogel becomes the longest ski slope in the Eastern Alps .
On Hochkönig, at an altitude of 2941 m, is the house of Austrian tourists clubs (Matrashaus). At this point there is also a popular launching ground for hang gliding and paragliding .
Extraction of natural resources
Copper was mined at the foothills of Hochkönigea from the time of the Neolithic period (about 3000 BC.) And until 1977. In addition, iron ore was mined in the area until the sixties of the twentieth century.
