ILPTO has the authority to accept, search internationally and pre-examine internationally in relation to international patents registered under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT ).

Goals and objectives
The main activity of the Patent Office is to ensure the legal protection of intellectual and industrial property in Israel by registering patents, industrial designs, trademarks and appellations of origin . The granting of rights is conditional upon consideration of the application for registration and examination designed to ensure the exclusive rights that registration grants to the applicant without violating the legal rights of others.
The registrar of patents, industrial designs and trademarks is authorized to conduct litigation on issues of objections to the examination of decisions, objections to the provision of legal protection. In addition, the Office provides information and advice on patents, industrial designs and trademarks, as well as information on the functions and tasks of the Office.
Through the PCT Division, the Patent Office accepts international patent applications, and these applications are processed in accordance with the PCT International Convention.
Representatives of the Office take part in meetings of commissions dealing with issues of legislation and instructions relating to patents, industrial images and trademarks.
Structure
The Israel Patent Office has four divisions:
- Patent Department
- Department of Industrial Designs
- Trademark Department
- PCT Division
In parallel with these departments, there is a legal department serving the entire department as a whole.
At the head of the organization is the Patent Registrar. By decision of the Minister of Justice of Israel, Aeleth Shaked , in March 2017, Ophir Alon, lawyer, was appointed to this position.
History
The first patent application was filed in 1917 (during the duration of the British mandate ) under the title "Improvements in the operation of the tram." A patent for the application was granted in 1920.
In September 2009, the World Intellectual Property Organization granted ILPTO the status of an International Searching Authority (ISA ) and an International Preliminary Examining Authority (IPEA ) [1] . In June 2012, ILPTO began accepting international applications under the PCT Convention.
