Biography
In 1854 he graduated from the Department of Philosophy at the University of London . He studied under Charles Salaman (piano). In 1859-1873 he served as a church organist and at the same time in 1861-1885 he taught at the London School of the Arts at the Crystal Palace (piano). His first works were marked by the first prize of the Society of British Musicians in 1862 (string quartet No. 1 in E flat major, op. 1) and 1865 (piano quartet, op. 2). In 1871–1874 he was the editor of the magazine “Monthly musical record”, in 1874–1879 - “ The Academy ” and in 1879–1889 - “ Ateneum ”. He acted as a music critic. In the years 1876-1890 - conductor of the Hackney Choral Society. In 1876-1882 he taught harmony and composition at the National Special School of Music, from 1879 at the Royal Academy of Music , and from 1884 at the Guildhall School of Music and Theater in London (piano); since 1894 - professor at the University of Dublin . Among his students, Arthur Goring Thomas , Eugene d´Albert , John Waterhouse , Henry Wood , Edward Herman and others. The author of works on counterpoint, musical analysis, form, instrumentation. The editor of a number of oratorios and operas by G. F. Handel , in particular, Samson (1880) and Messiah (1902), arias and cantatas of I. S. Bach . His works were translated into Russian by Fyodor Köneman , Sergey Tolstoy and others.
