Bird Island ( Slovak. Vtáčí ostrov ) - an island of 6.86 hectares in the Grushovsky reservoir (area of 2518 hectares), which is included in the Gabčíkovo reservoir, located in the south-west of the town of Samorin ( Slovakia ). It was created artificially during the construction of the Gabcikovo-Nagymaros dams on the Danube in order to prevent flooding of certain areas. It is part of the Danube Meadows conservation area for waterfowl: black-headed gulls and herbalists live here, for whom this is the only breeding area in Slovakia. During the breeding and wintering seasons access to the island is closed.
Geography
The area of the island is 6.86 hectares. Most of the island is covered with grass, without solid wood. The coast is rocky, inaccessible for disembarkation. The nearest bank of the Danube is 700 meters from the island. The island is the largest breeding area for seagulls in Slovakia and one of the few places where waterfowl can breed (due to the creation of the Gabčíkovo reservoir followed by the destruction of forests and flooding of the banks of the Danube). Bird habitat conditions, however, depend on those responsible for managing the island.
