Biography
Came from the Lombard clan Sfondrati . Son of Francesco Sfondrati, 1st Marquis di Montafia, Knight of the Order of Alcantara , General of the Papal Naval Army, Castellan of the Castle of the Holy Angel , and Bianca Visconti [1] .
A relative of Pope Gregory XIV and brother of Giovanni Battista Sfondrati , Bishop of Pavia .
Knight of the Order of Calatrava , commander of Montemolina, member of the Supreme Military Council of the King of Spain, campaigner of one of the Tersio of the Italian infantry, lieutenant general of light cavalry, artillery general (from 1643 [2] ) and military surintendent of the province and county of Flanders [1] .
He participated in the Thirty Years and the Franco-Spanish Wars at the Dutch Theater. In August 1637 he led the siege of Venlo [3] , the next year he commanded cavalry in the army of the Cardinal Infanta , together with the troops of the imperial general Guillaume de Lambois, defeated the troops of the Prince of Orange in Gelderland, preventing the Dutch from taking revenge for the defeat at the Battle of Callot [4] ] .
In 1650 he was granted the title of knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece by Philip IV .
He was seriously wounded by a nucleus in 1652 during the siege of Gravelin , and died a few days later in Burbur [1] .
In honor of this general, Mikhail van Langren gave one of the lunar craters the name Sfondrati (now Seleucus Crater) [5] [6] .
