For the first time, the American neurophysiologist Glenn Doman began to use the global method of teaching reading. In classical pedagogy in many countries, in particular in teaching methods for Slavic languages, widely used methods of teaching reading through the perception of warehouses (not to be confused with a syllable), whole words and sentences. Nevertheless, the neurophysiologist Glenn Doman, the founder of the Philadelphia Institute for the Development of Human Potential, as well as the Japanese teacher Shinichi Suzuki, can be considered the founders of the scientifically based method.
G. Doman widely used the methods of global learning (not only reading, but also arithmetic, etc.) in working with children who have serious (acquired) brain disorders or brain damage in early childhood and achieved amazing results. Children, whose intellectual development was “put an end to,” after regular classes according to G. Doman’s method, began to not only develop as “normal” children, but also overtake their healthy peers in the intellectual development. Subsequently, this method began to be used to educate ordinary children.
The essence of the global method of teaching reading is that for a long time a child regularly perceives visually and by ear written words, phrases, short sentences. The simultaneous perception of information in several modalities (visually, by ear, tactilely) regularly for a long time helps the brain to form certain neural connections and mechanisms, as a result of which the child independently, "at a convenient time", displays the technology for reading any words and texts .
The global method of teaching reading is the most physiological for teaching young children, as it is built according to the same laws as teaching speaking.
As you know, the left hemisphere has analytical, logical functions, and the right hemisphere has synthetic, “global” functions. If this idea is figuratively simplified, we can say that the left hemisphere “sees” individual trees , and the right hemisphere perceives the forest . In children, during the period of brain maturation - and this is up to 7-9 years - the right hemisphere of the brain plays a leading role. It is precisely because of their “right-hemisphere” that children perceive any information globally, entirely, as in a photograph. This feature of children's perception should be the basis of any training - only in this case, teaching a small child can be considered physiologically justified and safe.
