History

Holy Face in Manoppello

The history of the foundation of the temple is associated with the appearance in St. Manoppello of the image of St. Lyc. In 1506, a mysterious wanderer brought a relic to the city. He handed it to a local resident Giacomo-Antonio Leonelli, and then disappeared. After a thorough examination, a decision was made on the authenticity of the relic. The image was kept in the Leonelli family until Marcia Leonelli sold it to the notary Donato Antonio de Fabrítiis. The new owner handed it over to the Capuchin priest Clement of Castelvecchio for storage. The fine linen was in need of restoration by Capuchin Monk Remigius of Rapino. He cut the fabric, which used to be a tablecloth, after which he placed the image in a walnut frame and covered it behind a two-glass cap [1] .

The temple in the name of St. Lyc was built around 1620 on a hill near the city of Manoppello, commissioned by the same Donato Antonio de Fabrítiis. At the church he founded the Capuchin monastery, to which in 1638 he gave the image of St. Lyc.

From the middle of the XIX to the middle of the XX century, the temple was rebuilt several times due to the increased number of pilgrims. The only building from the time of foundation was the chapel of St. Lyc. It was built in 1686 and is located to the right of the choirs . A relic was kept here. Since 1703, the celebration takes place on the day of the Transfiguration of the Lord .

In September 2006, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI visited the church. During his visit, he built the church of St. Likes to the rank of a small basilica [2] .

Altar of Saint Lic in Manoppello

The facade in the Renaissance style is made of red and white stone blocks, combined in a geometric design with crosses. In the center is a rose , which is a copy of the same window in the Basilica of Santa Maria di Colleleggio in L'Aquile .

The temple is a basilica with a single nave . The interior is designed in baroque style . Behind the marble altar , erected in 1914, the image of the Holy Face is kept. He stands on a pedestal behind a glass bell, like a relic in the church of St. Francis in Lanciano .

On the left side of the basilica is a bell tower , divided into three levels with the help of white stone cornices . Like many local 17th-century bell towers, it is built of red brick with white stone decorative elements. The central part of the lower sector of the bell tower is occupied by Rosa , while the two upper sectors have arched openings for bells.

The basilica contains works of sacred art, among which deserve special attention the wooden tabernacle of Capuchin monks Marangoni, the silver reliquary of Saint Lic made by Neapolitan masters of the 18th century, and the painting “Ascent to Golgotha” by an unknown master of the 17th century [3] .
