Biography

Koss was born into a Protestant family and was forced to leave his country in 1612. He lived in England, where he received his education.

Between 1614 and 1620 he worked as a builder under Elector Frederick V in Heidelberg . There he built part of Heidelberg Castle and created the parks surrounding it (“Hortus Palatinus”). In addition, he set up several gardens in England, for example, in Greenwich Park (now destroyed by the Shipbuilding Museum), Wilton House, Hatfield House and Sommerset House (the latter also destroyed), also some surviving works in Richmond Park.

Work

In his essay Les raisons des forces mouvantes, the first machine based on the elasticity of steam was described. However, he is not actually the inventor of the steam engine, especially since 14 years before him, Gambattista della Porta had published similar drawings. When planning the gardens, de Coss paid great attention to grottoes, and also sought to use hydraulic and pneumatic automatons in particular for animation of sculptures with the help of fountains and music. Being a representative of the Huguenots , de Cosse traveled throughout Europe from place to place. He worked as a hydraulic engineer and architect at Louis XIII . He also planned the gardens at Somerset House .

Salomon is the elder brother of Isaac de Cossa , an architect who took an active part in the construction of Wilton House .
