Description

On the roads of Varna there are two anchorage: summer and winter. In the case of a strong northeastern wind and unrest, the parking becomes unsafe, a third parking is available in the western part, at a distance of 70 from Cape Kaliakra , 26 km north-east of Varna. Two inland channels connect the sea and the port of Varna-Vostok with Varna and Beloslavsky lakes and the port of Varna-Zapad: the first channel with a draft of 11.5 m, the second with a draft of 11 m. The channels form the island on which the oil terminal is located. The berth depth allows you to receive ships with a displacement of 50 thousand tons, but for safety reasons ships with a draft of not more than 9.9 m and a surface dimension of not more than 46 m enter the port of Varna-Zapad. Vessels with a length of 200 m, a width of 26 m or a tonnage of more than 20 thousand tons can pass through the channels only in the daytime. The largest ship that visited the port is Norwegian Dream (length 220 m, tonnage 50,700 tons).

The port of Varna offers services of loading and unloading goods, freight forwarding, storage of goods and services for transporting goods in ISO containers . The port has 40 berths, 65 electric cranes and about 400 buildings and structures for servicing ships. The port area is 454 thousand m², of which 76 thousand m² are allocated for warehouses. Road and rail infrastructure has been developed, bulk, unloading, container and some bulk cargoes are accepted. Functioning rollers . Export items - urea, soda ash, cement, clinker, silica, fertilizers, grain, containers. Imports - coal, metals, ores and ore concentrates, oil, phosphates, wood, molasses, containers. Since 2006, the port of Varna has been the focus of the British company British Petroleum and the German manufacturer of wind turbines Saga. In 2008, there was a 57% increase in total tonnage, which exceeded port capacity, due to the diversion of cargo from other ports in the region and record wheat exports from northeastern Bulgaria that year.

Future

In 1999, a plan was proposed to expand the port of Varna until 2020. Major new construction, reconstruction, and modernization projects include a deepwater terminal and a roller terminal on the island under the Asparuhova Bridge, a grain terminal on the northern coast of Varna Lake south of the dry dock, a liquid chemicals terminal, and a cement-clinker terminal in Varna-Zapad. In Varna-Vostok, the passenger terminal and the terminal of rollers will be reconstructed. In 2007, plans were announced to transfer the container terminal to a new base on the northeastern coast of Lake Varna and redesign the old eastern port: it was to become a large amusement zone with a new cruise terminal, a marina, apartments, hotels, restaurants, museums, exhibitions, shops and other tourist facilities. A year later, it announced the construction of another deep-sea container terminal on the south side of the island for ships carrying more than 2500 teu.

In Beloslav, they were going to equip an oil and gas terminal. In connection with the gas crisis, in early 2009, the construction of a new terminal with an area of 30 hectares on the north-western coast of Varna Lake in Ezerovo was discussed . Another project was the restoration of the 192-km navigable channel of Rousse - Varna, connecting the lower Danube with the Varna Lakes and the Black Sea. Other port terminals will include a cruise terminal, terminals for the transportation of oil (Petrol), timber (LesPort) and coal (TPP Varna), as well as a railway ferry terminal (not included in the complex), which is located on the southern coast of Beloslavsky Lake near the port Varna West.
