Dmitry Vasilievich Markovich ( November 7, 1848 - December 9, 1920 ) - Ukrainian statesman and public figure, lawyer, writer.

Biography
Born in Poltava in the family of an officer of the Forestry Corps, spent his childhood in the village of Lokotki, Glukhovsky Uyezd , began his studies at the Novgorod-Seversky Gymnasium.
In 1862, the family moved to Vologda (“by the will of fate,” as Markovich wrote), where he continued his studies at the gymnasium. For some time he was a volunteer in the medical faculty of Kiev University.
In 1868, Markovich manages to enter the faculty of law at Novorossiysk University in Odessa.
Since 1873 he worked as a judicial investigator, judge in Ukraine , Bessarabia and in Warsaw . Since the early 1900s He lived in Volyn - in a small estate in the village of Mikhalkovtsy, Ostrog district , where he tried to help peasants to struggle with need, he was also engaged in agricultural work; and Podolia.
He began his literary activity on the verge of 1870-1880 with stories in Russian (pseudonyms Volynyak, Gaidabur, Markivchanin, Olenin). The first of Ukrainian stories - "Nevdalitsya" - was written in 1883. This is a period of active Ukrainian-philological activity with Alexander and Sofia Rusov, Feofan Vasilevsky, Alexander Voloshinov, Ivan Tobilevich, and Andrey Grabenko. O. Rusov, O. Voloshinov, T. Vasilevsky were arrested, Markovich’s intervention eased their fate - the price of the money contributed ensured the release of prisoners from prison. Since the beginning of 1885, the Elisavetgrad enlighteners are in exile in Kherson, and here they also transfer D. Markovich to work as an assistant to the provincial prosecutor.
He was a member of the Kherson Ukrainian circle, which was the beginning of a systematic Ukrainian educational work in the Kherson region. Ukrainian made his debut with stories (with his wife E.I. Markovich) in the almanac "The Steppe" (Kherson, 1886; published in St. Petersburg), arranged by him with his wife A. Markovich. He wrote about 20 stories, one comedy, two memories. The author of the collection of short stories “On the Steppes and Farms” (1898, 1908) and “Works” (vols. 1-2, 1918-19).
During the revolutionary events of 1905, Markovich participated in the activities of the constitutional democratic party, and even influenced the elections in the city of Ostrog . In 1913 he moved to Vinnitsa , since 1915 he worked in the union of all credit and loan-savings partnerships of Podillia into a single provincial center "Podolsk Union of Credit and Loan-Savings Partnerships" under the abbreviated name "Podolsk Soyuz-Bank". November 1, 1915 Markovich was elected chairman of the board.
He was a member of the Society of Ukrainian Progressives, since 1917 he edited the weekly weekly Podolsk Volya in Vinnitsa. During the period of the Ukrainian Central Rada, from April 29, 1918, the Prosecutor General, in the Hetmanate in July, was a member of the Senate.
From February 13 to April 1919 he was the Minister of Justice of the UNR in the government of Sergei Ostapenko . In a short time, the new Minister of Justice cleaned up the judicial and prosecutorial apparatus in the territories subordinated to the UPR, strengthened the composition of the ministry, invited A. M. Livitsky as his adviser and acting comrade of the Minister of Justice. A number of important decisions and bills were adopted, in particular, provisions on Jewish public self-government, state acts on the provision of material assistance to the parents of dead Cossacks and victims of Bolshevik terror.
He died on December 9, 1920 in Vinnitsa.

- In honor of Markovich, streets in Kherson, Vinnitsa and Dnepropetrovsk are named.
- In Vinnitsa, an alley is named after Markovich.
