The color center is an area of the brain that is primarily responsible for the visual perception and cortical processing of color signals received by the eye, which ultimately results in color perception . The color center in humans is believed to be located in the ventral occipital lobe as part of the visual system , in addition to other areas responsible for recognizing and processing certain visual stimuli , such as faces, words and objects. Many studies of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in humans and monkey monkeys have shown activation by color stimuli of several brain areas, including the fusiform gyrus and the lingual gyrus. These areas, as well as others, defined as participating in color vision processing, are collectively designated the visual area 4 ( V4 ). The exact mechanisms, location and functions of the V4 are still being studied.
