Biography
Franz Otto is the eldest son of Duke Ernst I of Braunschweig-Luneburg and Sofia of Mecklenburg-Schwerinsky, daughter of Duke Henry V of Mecklenburg . He ruled in Luneburg since 1555. His reign was complicated by the debts he owed. In 1559, Prince Franz Otto married Elizabeth Magdalen of Brandenburg , but in the same year died of smallpox . There were no children in the marriage. He was succeeded by the brothers Wilhelm Braunschweig-Luneburg and Heinrich Braunschweig-Danneberg . He was buried in the city church of St. Mary in Celle .
