Competitions in sailing in the Laser Radial class at the 2016 Summer Olympics were held from 8 to 16 August in Marina da Gloria , which is located in Guanabara Bay . The competition was attended by 37 athletes from 37 countries. As in the men's competition in the “ Laser ” class, women in all 10 races of the preliminary round had different winners. Belgian Evi van Acker was closest to winning two victories, on account of which, besides the victory in the ninth race, there are three second places.
The Dutch champion Marit Baumester became the Olympic champion, who in the course of the tournament won only one race, but almost always finished the distance in the top 5 of the strongest [1] . For Baumester, this medal has become the second Olympic award. At the Games in London, Marit was second. [2]
The Irish yachtswoman Annalize Murphy and the Dane Anne-Marie Rind won the silver and bronze medals [3] . For both athletes Games in Rio de Janeiro were the second in their careers.
The current Chinese Olympic champion Xu Lijia took part in the competition, but took only 18th place, three times in the course of the competition receiving a disqualification.

Event Format
The main competitions in sailing in the class Laser Radial consisted of 10 races. In each race the athletes started simultaneously. The winner of each race was an athlete, the first to cross the finish line. The top 10 athletes on the results of 10 races fell into the medal race, double the results of which also went into the overall standings. In the final scoring, the worst result shown by an athlete in one of the races was not taken into account. The sailor, who scored the least points, became an Olympic champion.
- Scoring system
The number of points going to the overall standings corresponded to the place occupied by the yachtsman. If the competitor for any reason could not complete the race he was awarded 38 points.
