The underwater ridge is located at an altitude of 3300 meters below sea level and rises 2100 meters up from the seabed. The Carlsberg Ridge represents the modern border between Indian and African tectonic plates . According to the reconnaissance routes, it was classified as a ridge with a low growth rate, with a dissected relief, a deep rift valley and a network of transverse faults .

On July 15, 2003, the US Geological Survey recorded the largest seabed earthquake of 7.6 magnitude in the Carlsberg mountain range [1] .

Study History

The Carlsberg Ridge was discovered during the Dana round-the-world oceanological expedition (1928–1930) under the direction of Danish scientist Ernst Johan Schmidt , sponsored by the Carlsberg Foundation [2] [3] . For a long time it remained one of the most poorly studied mid-ocean ridges (MOR) of the World Ocean .

The gradual accumulation of information on the structure of the anomalous magnetic field (AMF) and other geophysical fields in the Indian Ocean occurred within the framework of national and international programs. Analysis and interpretation of the data obtained allowed us to restore the main stages of the formation of the Indian Ocean.

In the USSR, systematic magnetometric studies of the northwestern part of the Indian Ocean began in the early 1980s under the direction of geophysicist A. M. Karasik (1930-1987) and continue at the IZMIRAN SPbF founded by the Group of Marine Geophysics [4] . In 1980, under his leadership, the first Russian systematic marine magnetic survey was carried out during the expedition to the R / V “ Thaddeus Bellingshausen ” east of the Owen Fault Zone and south of the Murray Ridge , covering the water area of the Arabian Basin and the north-eastern slope of the Carlsberg Ridge [5] .
