History

The castle belonged to the aristocratic Fitzgerald family. Desmond owned this castle from the XV century to 1817 . The castle stands at a distance of 4 miles southwest of the city of Kilkenny , and 6 km from Ballyber Castle, not far from the village of Caffesgrainge and the priory of Kells. The castle is located on the lands of Burnchurch of Barony Schilleloger .

In ancient times, the castle consisted of two towers and a wall surrounding the castle courtyard. The main tower had 6 floors, and a huge number of passages with rooms inside. There was once a large hall that was attached to the main tower. Now there is no trace of the big hall. Old drawings of the castle have been preserved, which depict additional buildings that now do not exist. In the castle there are numerous narrow rooms hidden in the walls, including a “secret room” on the 4th floor. A staircase connecting the floors is preserved and leads to a small tower, loopholes, a carved fireplace, and a tall chimney are preserved. The rounded chimney was rebuilt several times. By design, the castle is somewhat reminiscent of Clare Castle. The battlements are built in Irish style.
