He graduated from seminary in his hometown and the Palermo Conservatory as a flutist; He also studied counterpoint and instrumentation under the direction of Pietro Platania and Antonio Pasculli . At the end of the course in 1883 he moved to Milan , where he performed as a flutist in private salons, then taught the flute for some time at the Pesaro Musical Lyceum .
In the early 1890s returned to Milan and began his career as a conductor. In 1893-1896 chief conductor of the San Carlos Opera House in Lisbon , then again in Italy. In the years 1921-1928. choirmaster of the Milan Opera House " La Scala ".
In 1903-1932 vocal professor at the Milan Conservatory . Among his most important students are Angelo Scandiani and Elena Nikolai .
