Undertow ( Rus. Underwater current ) is the debut studio album of the American alternative metal band Tool , released on April 6, 1993 on the record label Zoo Entertainment . According to AllMusic , Undertow contributed to the popularization of progressive rock , and also helped to stay in the mainstream metal in general. The album was released at the peak of the popularity of grunge and the beginning of widespread pop punk ^[3] . AllMusic indicate that the success of the album is due to "a vivid, memorable video sequence that complements the dreary nihilistic mood " ^[3] . as of July 2010, 2010, more than 2,910,000 copies of the album were sold in the United States, which allowed him to receive platinum status twice ^[7] .
