Square with loops

A square with loops ( ⌘ ) is a symbol that looks like a square with loops outside at the corners. It is so called, for example, in works devoted to Mississippi culture [1] . Also known as a landmark symbol [2] , when used as an information symbol for a practice started in northern countries in the late 1960s [3] . This symbol is also known as the coat of arms of St. John or the cross of St. Hannes (associated with the Swede. Sankthanskors , dates. Johanneskors and fin. This is an ancient symbol used by several cultures, but today it remains in common use. It belongs to a class of characters, which in Norway are called valklo [4] .

Content

Ancient usage

The symbol appears on a number of ancient objects in Northern Europe . He is depicted on a stone from Hablingbo , Gotland , Sweden , which was created between 400 and 600 years BC. er [five]

It also looks like a traditional heraldic emblem called the Bowen knot [6] .

In Finland, this symbol was painted or carved on houses, sheds and household utensils, such as dishes, to protect them and their owners from evil spirits and bad luck. Nowadays, the symbol is used in Norway , Sweden , Finland , Iceland , Denmark , Germany , Estonia , Latvia , Lithuania , Belarus and Ukraine to designate places of cultural interest since the late 1960s in the Scandinavian countries [3] . There is a modern opinion that it was chosen because of the similarity with the top view of Borgholm Castle [9] ; however, this symbol is widely represented in Scandinavian artifacts that are several centuries older than this castle [5] .

Later this symbol began to be widely used in computing . It is used on Apple keyboards to designate the command key [10] .
