History of origin

Cocktails with umbrellas

The exact date of the invention of the cocktail umbrella is unknown [2] [3] . It is believed that in the 1930s Trader Wick (Victor Bergeron) invented the , owner of a network of tiki bars in America . Some researchers believe that this happened in the late 1950s and attributed the invention to a bartender named Harry Yee (Hilton Waikiki bar, Hawaii ). It has been suggested that cocktail umbrellas were a marketing ploy to attract women to bars [4] [5] [6] .

Construction and Production

Usually, a cocktail umbrella is made of multicolored decorative paper, cardboard, toothpicks. Umbrella folds in 16 or more sections [7] [8] . According to Vedomosti (2009), umbrellas for cocktails were not made in Russia and imported from other countries [9] .

In many umbrellas for cocktails you can find old Chinese newspapers used for their production. To find them, you need to remove the top of the umbrella and unravel a small piece of paper located at the end of the base. According to Travel + Leisure travel magazine , the “secret message” contained in a cocktail umbrella can be an excellent opportunity to talk in a bar [10] .

Security features

According to the observations of Professor Daniel Weiks, evaporation of alcohol vapors in the sun does not occur faster than in the shade, if the temperature of the cocktail is the same, so alcohol in a cocktail with ice is safe, regardless of the presence of an umbrella. Peter Wolhardt, a professor of chemistry at the University of Berkeley, argues that after the ice melts and the temperature of the cocktail rises above 0 ° C, the vapor pressure of the alcohol rises and it evaporates more actively. But, in his opinion, this conclusion is irrelevant, because cocktails are drunk long before this point [4] .
