Biography
Born in Odessa on September 30 ( October 12 ), 1876 , in a Karaim bourgeois family. In 1885 he entered the preparatory class of the Second Odessa Gymnasium, which he graduated in 1894 with a silver medal. In 1898 he graduated with the diploma of the first degree of the mathematical department of the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of the Imperial Novorossiysk University in Odessa . In 1904 he graduated from the mechanical department of the St. Petersburg Institute of Technology .
From 1904 he worked as a laboratory assistant in the department of materials resistance at the Warsaw Polytechnic Institute, where he equipped an excellent educational and scientific laboratory. In 1906-1913 he was an observer of the Magneto-Meteorological Observatory of the Novorossiysk University. In addition, he, since 1908, is a teacher at the Higher Women's Courses and a real school in Odessa . In addition, he began to lecture on hydrometeorology at Novorossiysk University. In 1908-1909 He was an intern at meteorological observatories in St. Petersburg and Kiev . In 1910 he passed the exam for the master 's degree in physical geography .
In the years 1913-1914. preparing for a professorship at the University of Heidelberg - in the laboratory of Lenard .
In 1915-1918 headed the Pavlovsk department of the Main Geophysical Observatory of Russia and taught at the Petrograd Higher Women's Courses .
Upon returning to Odessa, he held the position of senior physicist in the field of terrestrial magnetism of the Odessa Geophysical Observatory and, part-time, the Nikolaev Main Observatory. Since 1919, he was assistant professor of Novorossiysk University.
The title of professor MA Aganin was received in 1922, at the same time he headed the department of physics at the Odessa Polytechnic Institute . At the same time, he continued to work at the Geophysical Observatory, which was separated from the university during its reorganization. In the observatory, Professor M. A. Aganin led the department of actinometry and terrestrial magnetism .
In 1931-1935 supervised magnetic survey of the territory of Ukraine . He organized a magnetic measurement of 1500 points and for the first time made a magnetic map of Ukraine. He conducted a magnetic survey of the Black Sea and Azov coasts.
In 1939 he was elected a corresponding member of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences .
In 1939-1940 taught at Odessa University .
He died on December 25, 1940 in the train, when he returned to Odessa after a scientific trip. Buried in Odessa .
Scientific Activities
Was a specialist in physics, the formation of precipitation and terrestrial magnetism. Particularly interested in the problem of rain management, the formation of raindrops. He studied the mechanism of merging drops and theoretically explained the law of B. Keller. He studied the formation of dew and fogs, the beginning of the theory of artificial effects on clouds and fogs. Built a device to measure the radiation of the night sky. In 1931 he restored the registration of the potential of the electric field of the Earth. He founded the Magnetic Observatory in the village of Stepanovka, 60 km from Odessa. It was opened in 1939.
