The fire at the ammunition depot in Balakliya began at about 3 a.m. on March 23, 2017 and caused the detonation of ammunition at the military depot in the city of Balaklea , Kharkov region of Ukraine .

Information about a fire in the territory of the 65th arsenal of the Central Rocket and Artillery Directorate of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was received by the State Emergency Service at 2:56 on March 23 [1] . The fire covered several storage sites for tank artillery shells of caliber 125 and 152 mm, the fire spread to about a third of the base, whose area is 368 ha [2] . Around the fire zone a 7-kilometer line was organized [3] , a zone within a radius of 50 km was declared an emergency zone [4] . More than 500 people and 150 pieces of equipment, including 330 firefighters and 55 fire trucks [1] , as well as fire tanks [5], were involved in the aftermath of the fire. The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported that at 13 o’clock the fire spread further, covering new areas in the base [6] ; later, Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman said that about half of the base remains on fire [7] .
Due to the fire, the evacuation of the population of the city and villages adjacent to military warehouses began. So, more than 16 thousand people were evacuated from Balakliya , 2700 people from the village of Verbovka , the village of Prishib , 806 people from the village of Yakovenkovo, the village of Volokhov Yar [8] , and more than 36,000 people [9] were evacuated from the city and the surrounding area [9] radius of 10 kilometers [10] .
265 buildings were damaged, of which: 231 residential buildings (114 private and 117 multi-apartment buildings), 22 infrastructure and industry facilities, 12 social facilities [9] .
As a result of the fire, rail traffic through the Balakley station [1] was stopped, highways [11] were blocked around the city, the sky for aircraft was closed within a radius of 50 km around the epicenter of the fire [12] , Kharkovgaz shut off the city’s gas supply [4] .
The main cause of the fire, the Ukrainian authorities called sabotage [9] .
During clearance as of March 26, more than a thousand explosive items were seized [5] .
