Opinions
Criticism
The film became an occasion for scandal at the Venice Film Festival: critics accused Manchevsky of intentionally distorting facts, propaganda and even racism. According to Alexander Walker from The Evening Standard , Manchevsky intentionally portrayed the Turkish army in the film as a bunch of bandits and criminals, and also sought to denigrate all Muslims. Manchevsky rejected all the allegations, saying that the film has killers of all nationalities, including Greeks and Americans. However, massive criticism led to the fact that the fees from the film did not reach the level of fees of another famous brainchild of Manchevsky - " Before the Rain " in 1994 [4] [5] . The site Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a critical rating of 21% with an average rating of 3.9 points on a 10-point scale [6] . Variety David Stratton criticized the film, saying that the film simply borrowed everything from the Western genre, but it was too picturesque for the action movie and too bloody for the arthouse [7] .
However, there were also positive assessments. Kevin Thomas from the Los Angeles Times wrote that this film includes scale, bravura and ambition, and that only a talented director could take it [8] . Elvis Mitchell of The New York Times noted that the film is a powerful, confident and ambitious work, in which the British played the roles of Americans Adrian Lester and Joseph Fiennes, as well as Australian David Wenham. The scene with the camera moving up the building at the very beginning of the film, according to Mitchell, can be associated with Manchevsky viewing a selection of stories to determine which one would be most suitable for the film [9] .
