Biography
Born in the family of Emil and Marie Flagrat. Together with his sisters Edna and Virginia, she became an actress at the insistence of her mother. Together with her sister Virginia ( Viola Dana ), Mason made her debut in the film The Christmas Carol (1910) [6] . At that time they were 10 and 13 years old, respectively [7] . The next picture with Mason was the film The Threshold of Life (1911).
As a child actor, Mason was not in great demand. Success in her career was not noticed until 1915, when she starred in the film Vanity Fair . In 1917, her career went uphill after she then starred in thirteen films and got the main role in the film The Awakening of Ruth [8] . In the 1920s, Mason continued her acting career and played several major roles. In 1929, she played her last role in the film The Flying Marine (appearing there with her sister Viola). From 1910 to 1929, she played in 109 films.
The Flagrath sisters were a talented trio and all three played film to a large extent. Born in 1893, Edna Flagart was the eldest in the family and the only sister who acted in films under her real name. And Virginia, born in 1897, took the pseudonym Viola Dana. Leoni was the youngest of the sisters and, when working in the film industry, took the name “Shirley Manson”. The Flagrat sisters' mother dreamed of a theatrical career at one time, and at her insistence all three sisters were enrolled in a dance school. The sisters spent most of their childhood on tour, performing on Coney Island and elsewhere [9] .
As a result, the efforts of the mother paid off; all three sisters signed a contract with Edison Studios . Viola met her husband John Collins while working at Edison, and as a result, the young director and actress became co-workers and a couple. Edna also met her husband, Harold Shaw, working in this studio. Subsequently, they got married, and later Harold founded the British Film company. Shirley’s husband was actor and director Bernard Durning . Despite the eight-year age difference, they got married when Mason was only 16 years old.
The marriage continued until 1923, when Bernard passed away from typhoid fever , leaving 22-year-old Shirley a widow. In 1927, Shirley married director Sidney Lanfield . They lived together until 1972, when Lanfield died of a heart attack [10] .
