History
The airport was founded in 1967 as a training ground for pilots of the Bulgarian Air Force . It had the name of the 11th Shtryklevo airbase and was equipped with Aero L-29 Delfin airplanes. Used by the state-owned airline Balkan for domestic flights to Sofia Airport . After the fall of the communist regime in Bulgaria, domestic flights were deemed unprofitable, government funding ceased. The airport served as a training base until 1998, after it was disbanded.
Development
The Bulgarian government decided to grant a concession to some of its international airports, but the first procedure at the end of 2007 did not succeed, although interest was expressed by Swiss investors Ferdinand Prisi and Bulgarian company Prista Oil. [2] The government decided to make a new bid for the airport and the new tender was to be held in mid-December 2007 [3] , but then the tender was postponed indefinitely.
In mid-October 2014, the Ministry of Transport decided to provide Ruse airport as the property of the municipality . The idea was approved by the municipal council and a corresponding agreement was concluded in November 2014 [4] .
The Bulgarian government transferred the ownership of real estate in the village of Shtryklevo , as well as its share in the Ruse airport to the municipality on December 17, 2014 [5] . The legal procedure was completed on February 4, 2015 [6] . At the moment, the airport is officially owned by the municipality of Ruse.
