Biography

Born in the village of Shaimurzino in Chuvashia , in the family of a teacher, Chuvash by nationality. Father died during the Great Patriotic War. From a young age he wrote poetry in the Chuvash language, in 1953 he graduated from the Batyrev Pedagogical School and entered the Gorky Literary Institute , where he studied in the creative workshop of Mikhail Svetlov .

In March 1958 , he was expelled from the institute “for writing a hostile book of poems that undermines the foundations of the method of socialist realism” [5] (“The Ordinance of a Miracle.” Original for the first time: “Friendship of Peoples”, 1993, No. 12). Under the influence of Pasternak, Aigi began to write in Russian, and also decided to stay in Moscow - and for 10 years (1961-1971) headed the isosector in the State Museum of V.V. Mayakovsky .

In parallel to the original poetic work in Russian, Aigi did a lot of translating world poetry into Chuvash, creating the anthologies "Poets of France", "Poets of Hungary", "Poets of Poland". The role of Aigi in the world propaganda of Chuvash poetry and Chuvash culture is recognized. Since the early 1960s Aygi poems are published in some countries in Russian and in translations into different languages; in Russia, the first book of Russian poems by Aigi appeared in 1991 - and since that time he has been one of the most experimentally oriented Russian poets of the older generation.

A special place in the life and work of Aigi was occupied by the Russian artist Igor Vulokh . Their friendship began in 1961. In 1988, in the preface to the monograph by on Vulokh, the verses of Gennady Aigi “Twelve Parallels to Igor Vulokh” were printed. In 1997, 2001, at the Vulokh personal exhibitions in Moscow, a joint exhibition with Aigi was organized, "Flourishes of Fire", dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Nobel Laureate Tumas Transtremer .

In Aigi's work, the influence of Chuvash and other Volga folklore, in general folk culture, is strong; he constantly turns to the oldest archetypes of popular consciousness. At the same time, Aigi directly continues the tradition of Russian and especially European (primarily French, but also German, especially in the person of Paul Celan ) poetic avant-garde, which can be seen, in particular, from the very special role that the visual-graphic play in his poetry text design, author’s punctuation system, very different from colloquial syntax , a system of end-to-end motives and keywords moving from text to text (this last property paradoxically makes Aigi’s poetry no longer with futurism , but with symbolism ).

Through the work of Aigi, there is a philosophical opposition of the idea of the subject and its embodiment, the ratio, often referred to as the “double” himself. Aigi is a poet of abstract metaphors that are far from always deciphering, leaving the possibility of individual interpretation. In his verses, fragmentary images and thoughts clash, often expressed only in separate words, which, due to their isolation, impede attempts to interpret. <...> The extraordinary, innovative in Aigi’s poetry does not consist in a semantic game, but in a serious search for new, modern means of linguistic expressiveness directed against empty, emasculated functionality, against reducing the verse to mechanistic. Aigi's poetry is a spiritual protest in the name of genuine humanity.
