Prince Tarnovsky

Prince Tarnovsky ( Bulgarian: Prince Tarnovsky ) - a title previously given to the first-born of the Bulgarian monarch , heir to the throne. [one]

Tarnovo (Veliko Tarnovo) is the old Bulgarian capital. It was the strongest Bulgarian fortified city during the Middle Ages between the 12th and 14th centuries, as well as the most important political, economic, cultural and religious center of the Bulgarian kingdom. In the 14th century, as the Byzantine empire weakened, Tarnovo began to claim the role of a third Rome due to its strong cultural influence in the Balkans , especially with regard to the Orthodox Slavs of the peninsula.

In 1393, after fierce resistance during the three-month siege, Tarnovo was captured and the entire Bulgarian kingdom fell as a result of the invasion of the Ottoman Empire . Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Shishman moved his residence to the castle in Nikopol , although he accepted the title of Prince Tarnovo ( Bulgarian: Mr. Tarnowski ).

In 1593, the descendant of the medieval Shishman dynasty, Theodor Ballina from Nikopol, took the title of Prince Tarnovo. He was also the leader of the First Tarnovo uprising against the dominion of the Ottoman Empire. In 1686, Rostislav Strashimirovich , another descendant of the dynasty and leader of the Second Tarnovo Uprising , also accepted this title. During the Third Tarnovsky Uprising in 1835, the title was also adopted by the leader of the Uprising Velho Atanasov.

After his abdication of the Bulgarian throne, Prince Alexander Batenberg claimed the title of Prince Tarnovo and used it until his death.

In 1894, the first son of Tsar Ferdinand I , Boris , as crown prince, that is, the heir to the Bulgarian throne, received the title of Prince Tarnovo. The use of the title was continued by the royal family of Bulgaria after the abolition of the monarchy in 1946. The wife of the prince bears the title of Princess Tarnovskaya ( Bulgarian Princess Tarnovska ). At the moment, the title is held by Prince Boris (born 1997), the Duke of Saxony, the eldest son of Prince Kardam (1962–2015), the grandson of Tsar Simeon II .
