History

The ruins of the mosque are located on the territory of the former estate of the artist Ivan Aivazovsky [4] . The name “lead mosque” may be due to the fact that during the construction of the mosque, facing stones were fastened with lead jumpers, or because of the lead coating of the dome.

According to Evliya ебelebi , the mosque was built in 1396 at the direction of the granddaughter of Kutlug Timur Bai Bugly Hatun and was originally teki (the abode of dervishes ). In 1398, it became a quarterly mosque [5] .

Architecture

The structure is rectangular in plan (12.5 × 17.5 m). During construction, fragmentary (coarse) lime-stone and square bricks were used. The entrance to the mosque is arranged in the form of a portal framed by pylons [5] . An important architectural feature of this mosque is the pair of stone buttresses that strengthen the western and eastern walls - the same vertical protrusions that strengthen the outer wall were in the Al-Akmar mosque , built in Cairo in 1125. Another buttress is located on the south wall behind the mihrab niche. This niche was initially rectangular, but then changed its shape, becoming polygonal. The minaret was located in the northeast corner, where the remains of its base have been preserved. The interior of the mosque was divided into two parts of different sizes: a large square room (10.5 × 10.6 m) with a mihrab, covered by a dome, and a small rectangular northern room (10.5 × 4.5 m), covered by three semicircular arches [5] .
