Biography
Yitzhak Pundak was born on June 13, 1913 in Polish Krakow , which was part of Austria-Hungary . In 1933 he emigrated to Eretz Yisrael , at that time under British occupation and then entered Haganu.
Military career
In 1945 he was an instructor in platoon commander courses. During the Israeli War of Independence, Yitzhak served in HIS , commanded a battalion in the Givati brigade , and participated in the battle of Nitzanim . At the end of the war, he commanded the Oded brigade, participated in operations "Joab" and " Hiram ." In 1951 he created a detachment that broke away from Gadna. In 1952 he took a tank war course in France , then was appointed to the post of head of the tank corps in the Israel Defense Forces . February 3, 1954 was promoted to the rank of brigadier general . In 1971, he was appointed governor of the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip . He proposed a plan to deport Arabs from the Gaza Strip to a new city in the Sinai, but met with opposition from Ariel Sharon .
Civil Service
During the first intifada, he supported the unilateral evacuation of the Gaza Strip. In November 1965 he was appointed Israeli Ambassador to Tanzania . Later he was ambassador to Guatemala and El Salvador (concurrently).
