Etymology
The toponym Hadzhiko in translation from the Adyghe language means “Hajji valley”, where Khadzhi is a person who made a pilgrimage to Mecca (as well as a proper name) and kyo is a valley [2] .
History
Until 1864, the place where the aul Hadzhiko is now located, like the entire valley of the river Ashe , was densely populated by the Shapsug auls. After the end of the Caucasian War, virtually all of the surviving local population was evicted into the Ottoman Empire , for not wanting to become part of Russia.
In 1865, the persecution, repression and subsequent eviction of the Circassians who continued to hide in remote mountain-wooded areas began.
For the complete replacement of the Highlanders, several Caucasian linear battalions were deployed. One of these military units was located in the valley of the river Ashe . In 1869, their garrison received the official name - "settlement Aleksandrovskoe" [3] .
The exact date of the founding of the modern village Hadzhiko is not known for certain. In 1876, about 10 Shapsug families from the area of the Kudepsta River were sent here. Another significant part of the current population of the village of Khadzhiko is the descendants of the Shapsugs , who returned in the late 1880s from the lower reaches of the Kuban River , where they had previously lived in the auls Mezmay and Asrtekhable. Shapsugs returning from Kuban substantiated individual neighborhoods - Asareth and Mazmai, which were considered part of the village of Aleksandrovskoye, which also included the villages located above.
In 1920, with the establishment of Soviet power, the village of Aleksandrovskoye was renamed the village of Krasnoaleksandrovskoye.
In September 1924, the village of Krasnoaleksandrovskoye was transferred to the Shapsug national region of the North Caucasus region .
In 1925, the village of Krasnoaleksandrovskoye was divided into three parts - the 1st Krasnoaleksandrovskoye (now Khadzhiko) , the 2nd Krasnoaleksandrovskoye (now Kalezh ) and the 3rd Krasnoleksandrovskoye (now Lygotkh ).
In 1945, the Shapsugsky District was reorganized and renamed the Lazarevsky Municipal District .
In 1962, with the inclusion of the Lazarevskiy District into the city of Sochi , the village of Krasnoaleksandrovskoye 1 was transferred to the Tuapse District .
From December 26, 1962 to January 12, 1965, the village was part of the Tuapse rural district, and then returned to the Lazarevsky district of the city of Sochi . In the same year, the village was incorporated into the newly-formed village council of Krasnoaleksandrovsky in the Greater Sochi .
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Russian Federation of March 1, 1993, the settlement of the 1st Krasnoaleksandrovskoye was renamed into the village of Khadzhiko .
Sometimes small settlements, Hatlape and Bjef, downstream of the Ashe River are considered part of the Hadzhiko village.
