A Grammy in the nomination “The Best Female Vocal Performance in the Style of Rhythm and Blues” was awarded from 1968 to 2011, for the most significant songs in the rhythm and blues genre. Each year, the National Academy of Art and Science of Sound Recording of the United States selected several applicants for "artistic achievements, technical skill and significant contribution to the development of sound recording without taking into account album sales (single) and its position in the charts" [1] .

For the first time, the Academy noted musicians in this category at the 10th Grammy Awards (1968). The first winner of the award was American singer Aretha Franklin with the song “ Respect ”. According to the description of the nomination, the award was awarded to recently recorded solo R & B compositions. ” For the award could not be nominated material "recorded by members of groups, ensembles or duets solo, separately from the main team."
