History
In the Hellenistic period, the main city of the diocese was called Bithynius. During Roman rule, the city was renamed Claudiopolis in honor of the Emperor Claudius.
The Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire Theodosius II (408–452) made Clavdiopolis the capital of the province of Honorius , formed from Bithynia and Paflagonia and named in honor of the Roman emperor Honorius [1] . After that, the city for several centuries (until 1325) was under the control of the Byzantine Empire , being the department of the Orthodox bishop.
Currently, the department is titular. The title of bishop of Claviopolis is conferred on the titular (vicar) bishops of the Orthodox Church of Constantinople [2] .
