The son of a wealthy merchant; in his youth traveled a lot in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. At 21, he worked as a private correspondent for the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad , covering the events of the Third Carlist War in Spain. Subsequently, he went to the Balkans and informed the newspaper of the events of the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878). In 1879, his father died, and Schuver inherited the estate. At this time, he planned the realization of the dream of a lifetime, a scientific expedition to the interior of Africa. He joined the Royal Geographical Society in London and attended classes in various subjects to prepare for the upcoming trip.
In March 1881, he reached Khartoum with a small detachment and subsequently spent most of the next two years researching southeastern Sudan, in particular the eastern watershed of the White Nile and the mountainous regions surrounding the headwaters of the Blue Nile. In southern Sudan, he showed a keen interest in the political and social aspects of the area and made important historical and ethnographic observations of the various tribes he encountered. In August 1883, he was mortally wounded by a spear during a skirmish with the Dink tribe in Tek, a village that was a two-day journey from the garrison in Meshra Air River.
Schuver kept extensive records during the expedition, and the items he collected during his stay in Sudan are now housed in the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden.
