In 1868, in the then Kargin farm, a single-altar wooden Intercession Church with a wooden bell tower was built. [2]
On November 8, 1891, a parochial school was opened at the church, which is under the jurisdiction of the Holy Synod, in which the children of rich Cossacks and clergymen were taught. On February 1, 1896, a female parish school was opened. By 1912, there were nine parish schools and public schools in the parish of the Karghinsky church. [2]
When neighboring farms appeared next to Kargin and the parish expanded, the existing wooden church became close. With the donations, the Cossacks decided to build a new, stone one. Having collected the necessary money, the construction of the three-altar temple began. The brick was burned in the Voronezh province, the bells were purchased for the bell tower, patterned wrought-iron grilles were made in the windows, and iron doors were hung. Under the dome of the temple on chains was hung chandeliers for 150 candles. The church was surrounded by a brick railing of figured masonry. [2]
The new church was solemnly opened in 1886 on the day of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos. In terms of size and decoration, the Karginskaya Church has become one of the largest and richest in the Upper Don. The wooden church was dismantled in 1892 and donated to the Kalach settlement on the Kurtlak River (instead of burnt down). In 1911, a church guard was built on the church grounds. Next to the temple was a cemetery, one of the oldest cemeteries of the Upper Don.
It is interesting that in this church on July 29, 1913, the parents of MA Sholokhov were married - Alexander Mikhailovich and Anastasia Danilovna. [2]
Having survived the revolution and civil war , in 1939 the temple was closed. It housed a local club and library; the cross and the bells were removed. Later the church building was dismantled and it was decided to build a school out of its bricks. Currently, the Karginsky House of Culture is located on the site of a stone church. [3]
Only after the collapse of the USSR , a new Orthodox parish was formed in the stanitsa, to which a stanitsa wooden house adapted for the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos was handed over - the cupola with a cross was installed in the center of the roof, a belfry was built nearby, the territory was surrounded by a metal fence.
The rector of the Holy Protection Church is Abbot Sofroniy (Sergey Timofeevich Shershen). [four]
Every year in the village on the day of the Intercession a fair is held dedicated to the feast of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. [five]
