Boothroyd began his professional career at Huddersfield Town , making his debut for the club in 1989 as a defender . In 1990 he moved to the Bristol Rovers , having played 16 matches for the club. After one season in Scotland as part of the Heart of Midlothian , he signed a contract with Mansfield Town . He played for Mansfield for three years, playing 102 matches and scoring 3 goals. In 1996 he moved to Peterborough United . In 1998, playing for Peterborough, he received a serious injury, which ended his career as a player at the age of 27 years [2] .
Coaching career
After completing his career as a player at Peterborough United, Butroyd worked as a coach for the club’s youth and reserve teams. In 2001 he moved to the Norwich City coaching staff, where he became a youth coach. In October 2003, he joined the West Bromwich Albion coaching staff. In July 2004 he was invited to Leeds United , where he became a coach of the main team.
Watford
On March 29, 2005, the 34-year-old Butroyd was appointed head coach of Watford [3] . In the seven remaining matches of the season under his leadership, the team was able to win two victories (over Stoke City and Rotherham United ) and avoided relegation from the Championship .
Before the start of the 2005/06 season, Butroyd announced that the team’s goal for the season is to enter the Premier League . At the end of the season, “Watford” took 3rd place in the Championship, which guaranteed itself participation in the playoffs for access to the Premier League. In the two-match playoff semifinal, the Hornets beat Crystal Palace , and in the final match at Wembley, Watford defeated Leeds United 3-0 and guaranteed themselves access to the top division [4] . This season, Butroyd was recognized as the “coach of the month” in the Championship following the results of February [5] .
Watford spent the 2006/07 season in the Premier League, but took last 20th place with only 28 points. In the same season, the "hornets" successfully performed in the FA Cup , reaching the semifinals in which they lost to Manchester United . In May 2007, Butroyd signed a new three-year contract with Watford [6] . In the summer of 2006, Ady Butroyd received a professional coaching license from UEFA.
“Professional footballers must be professionals. They have the obligation to come to training, listen to the trainer, study, watch and analyze their performances, including unsuccessful ones, and improve. Do not just come to training, play five by five, get down and go play golf. I speak quite emotionally, since I myself was like that. I was a mercenary, changing one club after another as a free agent, but I don’t think that football should be like that. ” - Adie Butroyd [7] |
In the 2007/08 season, Watford began the season with 10 wins in 13 matches, and after 19 games in the Championship he led the standings with a 12-point margin from second place [8] . Boothroyd was recognized as the “coach of the month” in the Championship in October 2007, when Watford won all five league games [9] . However, in the remainder of the season, the team’s results deteriorated, and Butroyd was often criticized for his team’s “unattractive” style of play, based on physical confrontations and long-range shots on the attackers [10] [11] . Watford won only 1 match of the last 14 rounds of the Championship. Nevertheless, the team took 6th place and entered the playoffs of the tournament, where they lost to the Hull City club.
Before the start of the 2008/09 season, Butroyd promised to change the team's playing style to a more attractive and technical one [12] . However, on November 3, 2008, Ady Butroyd resigned as head coach of Watford by “agreement of the parties” [13] [14] .
Colchester United
On September 2, 2009, Butroyd was appointed head coach of Colchester United , replacing Paul Lambert. [15] In his first nine games, he won five wins, and the first loss was in the tenth match, it was a game against Millwall ".
In the first half of the 2009/10 season, Colchester was in the top six, but ended up taking only 8th place in the League alone .
Coventry City

Northampton Town

At the time of his arrival at the club, Northampton was in the relegation zone from League Two , but ended up finishing the season in 20th place and retaining a place in the Football League.
In the 2012/13 season, Northampton took 6th place in League Two and reached the playoffs. The team beat Cheltenham Town in the semifinals, but lost in the final match of Bradford City [20] .
On December 21, 2013, Butroyd was dismissed as head coach of Northampton Town after losing to Wycombe Wanderers 4-1. The club was at the very bottom of League two standings [21] .
England Youth Teams
